Carroll signs new deal

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has signed a new five-year contract with the Barclays Premier League club.

The Gateshead-born forward, a product of the club's youth academy, has committed himself to the St James' Park outfit until 2015.

He told the club's official website: "All I have ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle United. That's been the case since I was a teenager, playing for the juniors and reserves, and it's still the same now."

Carroll, who was handed the famous number nine shirt at the start of the season, has so far scored four goals this term including a hat-trick in the 6-0 victory over Aston Villa in August.

"Every time I pull on the black and white shirt - and even more so now that I have number nine on my back - it means the world to me, so to be able to do that for at least the next five years is brilliant," added the England Under-21 international.

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias was equally thrilled with the 21-year-old's new deal.

He said: "We're dedicated to bringing exciting young players through our youth academy to play for the club.

"Andy Carroll certainly fits that bill, having graduated through the ranks here, and we're extremely pleased to have agreed with him a new long-term deal.

"Players like Andy are the future of this club and we have spent a long time putting together a deal that is right for both him and Newcastle United."

Bruce tightens purse strings

Steve Bruce does not expect Sunderland to be busy in the January transfer window.

Bruce enjoyed another hefty spree in the market over the summer, bringing nine players to the club for a total figure of around £18m.

The Sunderland manager has been backed by his board since arriving at the club in the summer of 2009, but he is fully aware that the Wearsiders want to see a return on their investment this term.

And Bruce knows he will not be splashing owner Ellis Short's cash when the market reopens.

He said: "We're never ever satisfied as managers, that's just the way we're made - there's always someone else out there you would like, someone who could strengthen your team or add a little extra.

"However, I do believe that I now just need time to work with what I've got. We can't just keep asking the owner to keep putting his hand in his pocket.

"He did it again over the summer and I'm very pleased with that because we brought in some top-class players and right at the end of the window we broke the club transfer record to bring in a major player in Asamoah Gyan."

Bosingwa nearing Chelsea comeback

Chelsea right-back Jose Bosingwa is ready to resume first-team football after a year sidelined with knee problems.

The Portugal international, 28, has not played since damaging knee ligaments against Aston Villa in October last year but could be ready to claim a place in the squad for Chelsea's trip to Villa Park next weekend.

Bosingwa is back in training again and could be joined soon by England midfielder Frank Lampard and Ivorian striker Salomon Kalou.

Lampard is working hard to get back to fitness following a groin injury, while Kalou is understood to have recovered from a thigh problem.

Blues midfielder Michael Essien has urged fans to be patient after the Blues recovered from their two recent defeats in some style.

Chelsea were beaten in the Carling Cup by the Newcastle United and then Manchester City repeated the feat in the league.

But they returned to form with a Champions League win over Marseille and a 2-0 home success over rivals Arsenal.

"The season has started well and although we suffered two losses on the bounce, I believe the team is capable of bouncing back and we showed that against Marseille and Arsenal," said Essien.

"All I will ask is for the fans to be patient with us when the going gets tough. The season is long and there will be ups and downs but as long as the fans are there with us during the downs as well as the ups, I have no doubt we will be fine.

"We were delighted with how the Arsenal game went. We had to do our fair share of defending but I think we defended well and my only regret is I didn't add to my three goals this season when I had a good chance at the end.

"One thing I will say though is that goals are sweet to score and I want more of it. I will keep trying and no doubt I will score more goals this season."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Petr Cech has been crowned Czech Republic player of the year for the fifth time.
